The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Love begets love and hatred begets hatred. The novel The Hate u Give depicts the life through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old, Starr Carter. The teenager is already finding it difficult to maintain equilibrium between the two contrasting worlds that she has a switch to and fro each day of her life. She herself is a resident of a poor colony whereas she attends an up market school. Tragedy befalls when her childhood bestie, Khalil is killed by a police official. Seeing him being shot even though he was unarmed and his subsequent death leaves an indelible mark on her impressionable mind. The nightmare doesn’t end there. It becomes a social, political and a criminal issue as Khalil’s name is splashed in the papers, and the mafia and the police threaten Starr with dire consequences if she doesn’t come clean on what actually transpired on that fateful day. Read the book to find out which way she chooses and what ensues after her verdict. The book is a sensitive portrayal of what violence brings in its aftermath and how the poor have to think twice about asking what is supposed to be their right. A brilliant piece of work by Angie Thomas.
