The Call of the Wild by Jack London
Buck is living his dream life California’s Santa Clara Valley. He is a large and powerful St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd, looked after by rich judge Miller and his family. Unfortunately, Buck is captured and stolen by the gardener’s assistant, Manuel, and sold to a gambling addiction. Later on, he is shipped to Seattle, and in a crate, he is starved and mistreated. Upon landing, he is released and suddenly attacks his overseer, but this man teaches the law of the club; hitting Buck until he is cowed. From there, they train him as a sled dog and with the help of his teammates, he quickly learns how to survive the cold winter nights and the pack society. For the first time, Buck gets into a rivalry with Spitz, the leader of the team, yet vicious and quarrelsome. They head into a fight in which Buck defeats Spitz and he is killed by the pack. Buck then becomes the leader of the team, but is this the life he has chosen for himself?
