Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
The book is considered as the most enigmatic story ever from Joseph Conrad. Well, this is the story of an adventurer and the unruly inhabitants of the Congo River region. Aboard the Nellie, anchored in the “River Thames” near Gravesend, England, Charles Marlow narrates to his fellow sailors of the past events that led to his appointment as Captain of a river steamboat for an ivory trading company. During his childhood, Charles had been fascinated by the black spaces on the map. Magic indeed, the big river had remained in an appearance of a big uncoiled snake; its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, while its tail lost in the depth of the land. The image of the river on the map was a source of fascination for Charles Marlow as a snake would a bird. Though with this feeling…. Marlow takes passage on a French steamer bound for the African coast to the interior.
